about

Ken Poovey of Denver, North Carolina, was among the many fiddlers approached by Delores DeRyke in the 1960s to provide a recording of their playing for her extensive archive of North American fiddlers. Poovey, a native of North Carolina, was a pioneer of Bluegrass fiddling and his style manifests influences from Nashville greats like Tommy Jackson as well as contemporaries such as Joe Meadows and Kenny Baker.

This recording was made in 1962 on a small reel-to-reel tape recorder. It features Poovey playing short performances of a number of fiddle tunes without accompaniment. He also features his father-in-law playing some solo as well as twin fiddle on a number of selections.

This tape is from the field recordings collection of Delores "Fiddlin' Dee" DeRyke of Lincoln, Nebraska. Ms. DeRyke was an avid promoter and collector of field recordings. Among her methods was to send blank tapes to fiddlers she met or heard of and ask them to fill the tape with their favorite tunes. Dozens of players from all corners of North America responded.

MSOTFA obtained these original reel-to-reel recordings, several boxes full, from Jack Shaw of Lincoln who bought them at an estate auction. We have painstakingly digitized and processed the material for your listening enjoyment and educational pursuits.

NOTE: Despite our best efforts, the quality of these recordings is not the best you'll ever hear. We find many of the tapes to be various states of deterioration, the emulsion sometimes coming off in chunks as they are being played. Still despite the lo-fi nature of the result they provide an important glimpse into style of playing, repertoire, tempo and bowing methods which can be derived by listening to these recordings.
