about

This recording is from a five-inch reel recorded around 1966 in Burr Oak, Kansas. It features two local musicians, Dan Pettit playing fiddle, piano accordion and banjo and Bill Yetter playing banjo and fiddle.

According to the tape Dan Pettit ran a cafe in Burr Oak and Bill Yetter worked at Burr Oak Plumbing.

Per his obituary:

"William Henry Yetter was born Oct 12, 1905 in Jewell County, Kansas. He died May 20 in his home in Burr Oak. He was the son of Antone and Minnie Karnatz Yetter.

March 28, 1928 he married Marjorie Ellen Webb at Clay Center, Neb., and they began farming seven miles north of Burr Oak. They had three children, Wayne, Vonna and Willena.

In 1956, the family moved to Burr Oak where he operated the Mobile Oil Station and later worked at Burr Oak Plumbing.

He was baptized in the Burr Oak Christian Church in 1963, and the church became an important part of his life. Yetter served the church as board member. Sunday School superintendent deacon and elder.

Music was always an important part of his life as he was taught to fiddle by his father at a young age. They played for many social gatherings and later joined the State Line Band, In later years, Mr and Mrs Yetter helped form the Senior Swingers and played oldtime music for their friends at area rest homes." This tape is from the field recordings collection of Delores "Fiddlin' Dee" DeRyke of Lincoln, Nebraska - Recorded c. 1966. Ms. DeRyke was an avid promoter and collector of field recordings. Among her methods was to send blank tapes to fiddlers she met or heard of and ask them to fill the tape with their favorite tunes. Dozens of players from all corners of North America responded.

MSOTFA obtained these original reel-to-reel recordings, several boxes full, from Jack Shaw of Lincoln who bought them at an estate auction. We have painstakingly digitized and processed the material for your listening enjoyment and educational pursuits.
