Kelly Jones - Authentic Old-Time Fiddle Tunes

MSOTFA is pleased to offer again to the fiddle lovin’ public this 1975 LP of one of Missouri’s greatest ever fiddle players, Kelly Jones. I’ve known Kelly for years, having spent a good number of occasions playing against him in contests, swapping tunes and lies and just generally joshing about with this most talented and also good-natured gentleman.

Kelly was one of the few fiddlers I have known who actually made a living playing fiddle, along with trading musical instruments and the like. He also once ran for public office! What’s that line from Jimmy Martin “We just might have a guitar pickin' president next year”? Well we sure could have used some fiddlin’ politicians in Missouri to sort things out! Anyway, Kelly performed professional as a young man at the Ozark Opry and later did a stint in Las Vegas with the Judy Lynn Show.

Kelly was a paragon of intonation, timing, feel and musical taste. I never saw anyone more adept at playing harmony fiddle either. As one who listened to a lot of the high-end commercial fiddle players on LP in the 60s & 70s you can easily put Kelly in a class with Tommy Jackson, Buddy Spicher, Shorty Lavender and host of other top-notch Nashville fiddlers.

Enjoy this great recording of one of Missouri’s finest!

From the original album notes:

“Oh no!” you say “Not another old-time fiddle album!” Oh yes --- but this is not just another fiddle album. First, consider the tunes here – I think you’ll find that at least half of the titles are new to you. Here are some truly old-time fiddle tunes which may not be familiar to many of you, certainly some that have not been “over-recorded”.

Next, consider the artist – Kelly Jones. Here, too, is a young fiddle player who may not be particularly familiar to many of you fiddle “buffs”. All the more reason you should get acquainted because you’ll be hearing more from him. This is Kelly’s first album effort but it’s sure to not be his last. Kelly was born and raised in the Missouri Ozarks and now makes him home in Stover, Missouri with his wife and young son. He received his early indoctrination to fiddling from his father. I recall the first time I ever saw Kelly. It was at a meeting of the Missouri Old-Time Fiddlers Association, when he and his father He was only in his early ‘teens and I was impressed then! He received further training and inspiration from a close friend, Dean Johnston, who is one of the best Missouri fiddlers. After graduating from High School, He went to work for Lee Mace’s “Ozark Opry” at the Lake of the Ozarks. His career was interrupted by a brief stint in the service, after which he returned to the Ozark Opry show. From there he was recruited for the Judy Lynn show, where you’ll find him today. He’s been with Judy Lynn now for several years, working primarily out of Las Vegas, and has become her right-hand man and band manager. But let me assure you that he hasn’t forsaken the old-time fiddle tunes! For example, he is an active officer in the National Old-Time Fiddlers Association. Kelly has made an extensive study of authentic, traditional fiddle tunes. Several of the tunes presented here were borrowed from learned collectors and musicians and I think you’ll find that he’s playing them exactly as they were meant to be played. He’s dedicated to maintaining that authenticity, and it shows in this album.

Kelly is backed on this album, proudly and we hope capably, by the Bluegrass Association from the Greater Kansas City, Missouri area. The members are John Bennett (guitar), Don Montgomery (bass), Chuck Stearman (mandolin), and Jim McGreevy (banjo).

In summary, Kelly Jones is not a new-comer when it comes to old-time fiddle music. He is an artist whose youth belies his taste, knowledge, and experience. For those if you who know him, you already know how good he is. For those of you who don’t, you’re in for a treat.
