about

These old tracks were taken from old reel-to-reel tapes that were copied several times and are no doubt generations removed from the original. Nonetheless, they are remarkable performances of one of Mid-Missouri's most notable old-time fiddlers, Cleo Persinger. Cleo is accompanied by his wife Lillian, who played with a thumb pick on a big Gibson guitar in the sort of minimalist style that was predominant at contests and dances in Central Missouri in the 1950's through 1980's.

Persinger was a contemporary of the young Texas "Shorty" Chancellor who allegedly once visited Cleo at his home in Midway, just west of Coumbia. Cleo won the National Fiddle Championship at Weiser, ID, in 1962.
