about

Originally on 8-track and vinyl, this recording by fiddler Roy J. Raines of New Franklin features 12 tracks of solid fiddlin' gold. We don't much about him, but Raines was born in Camden County (that's Lake of the Ozarks country) and doubtless cut his teeth on these old hoe-downs.

Interestingly, he calls the album "Old-Time Fiddlin' - Bluegrass Style". This is a nod to the fault line that existed in the 1960s and 70s between true old-time fiddlers and those who leaned toward Bluegrass. That said, these performances strike me as pretty straight ahead Missouri style fiddling.

I ran into Roy only occasionally at Mid-Missouri fiddle contests in the 70s & 80s.

Per findagrave.com Raines was born in Camden County MO February 8, 1914, and died in New Franklin, MO on September 29, 2004.
