about

Al Cooley was a businessman, fiddler and fiddle aficionado from Hannibal in Northwest Missouri. Al was a gentleman, generous with his praise of good fiddling and was present with his little cassette recorder at almost every contest I attended as a young man. Any place the fiddle was being played in public during the 1970s & 80s in Missouri Al was there. I'd guess this recording was made in the mid-1980s sometime.

MSOTFA has issued one of his recordings of Nolan Boone previously. More are in the pipeline, all taken from cassettes Al recorded on his little desktop Realistic cassette recorder. You know the kind I mean - with the four "C" batteries and the buttons across the bottom.

As a fiddler I wouldn't put Al in the top echelon, but nonetheless he was a stalwart participant and played the standard Missouri repertoire. While the top-flight fiddlers get most of the attention, not enough praised can be heaped on the majority of players who really keep any genre going by attending events and playing the repertoire and style in their home communities.
