about

Tape 2 (Track 2), 37:20 minutes -- “the last act” in round one

19. 00:00 Henry Wells (Franklin, left-handed player): Grey Eagle (his version has an extra beat in A part; has four parts), “the old Waltz in A” (the Wells family composition, a.k.a. Combination Waltz), Marmaduke’s Hornpipe (very nice A part; similar version to Jake Hockemeyer’s, with third part up the neck).

20. 05:50 Fred Stoneking (Blairstown): Coming Down from Denver (his second part is similar to Byron Berline’s and differs from most central Mo. fiddlers), “a waltz in C”, Dusty Miller.

“Call Back” contestants = fiddlers who made the cut and are into the play-off second round: here in the finals, they play a hoedown and a waltz (no third tunes).

21. 10:00 Jake Hockemeyer: Durang’s Hornpipe, Cowboy Waltz (here, Jakes starts with the high part; most start with the low part).

22. 12:50 Pete McMahan: Dance around Molly, “the B-flat waltz” (Charlie Cook’s composition; double-stops throughout the tune).

23. 16:20 Taylor McBaine: Marmaduke’s Hornpipe (with the third part up the neck), Wednesday Night Waltz (he plays Goodnight Waltz instead).

24. 20:45 Cleo Persinger: Grey Eagle, Rose Waltz (a different Rose Waltz from what others play).

25. 25:30 Dale Pauley: “play the Mockin’ Bird” / Listen to the Mockingbird; with bird calls and hokum bowing; this is a show tune being banned by most Mo. contests by this date; it is a very popular tune and an audience favorite…), Westphalia Waltz (w/ nice double stops).
